Steel Columns
Mark all column grid locations on the structural plans and count the total number from the plans. Take lengths from elevation drawings and multiply the column height by the cross-sectional weight per foot (W-shape or HSS type). Example: a 15’ W10×49 column = 15 × 49 = 735 lbs; add 5% for cutting and weld losses.
Steel Beams
Beam runs are measured from center-to-center of supports. Lengths are taken directly from framing plans. Multiply total linear feet by section weight per foot (e.g., W12x26 → 26 lbs/ft). So, a 25’ beam of W12x26 equals 25 × 26 = 650 lbs. Add 2% for splicing and connection.
Steel Trusses / Joists
Trusses are counted individually from the roof framing plan. The span, depth, and spacing (commonly 4’ or 5’ o.c.) are noted. Quantity = (Roof width ÷ spacing) × truss span length. The weight is taken from manufacturer’s tables (for open web joists, K-series).
Joist Girders
Joist girders are measured by counting each line in plan and noting their span. Weight is determined by joist manufacturer data based on chord sizes and loading. Simple estimate uses 6–8 lbs/sq.ft of supported area. Example: girder length 50’, spacing 20’ → 1000 sq.ft × 7 lbs = 7000 lbs.
Purlins
Measured along roof plan where purlins span between main frames. Count number of bays × purlins per bay × length per piece. If spacing is 5’ and building length 100’, there’ll be 20 purlins. Multiply length × section weight per foot (C/Z shapes usually 3–5 lbs/ft).
Steel Bracings
Bracings are identified from plan and elevation. Lengths are calculated using the diagonal formula √(H² + L²). Multiply the total length by the section weight per foot (e.g., 2.5 lbs/ft). Add 10% for gusset overlaps and field adjustment.
Base Plates
Each column location includes one base plate. Plate area = (Length × Width × Thickness × 490 lbs/cu.ft) ÷ 144 to get weight in lbs. Example: 12"×12"×1" plate = (12×12×1×490)/144 = 490 lbs per square foot, so ≈40.8 lbs per plate.
Connection Plates
Count the number of beam-to-column and beam-to-beam connections. Typical plate size is 6"×8"×3/8". Weight = (6×8×3/8×490)/144 = 8.16 lbs per plate. Multiply by number of connections and add 5% for miscellaneous.
Handrails
Measured in linear feet from stair and balcony drawings. Multiply total length by weight per foot of pipe (usually 2–3 lbs/ft for 1½” OD pipe). Add 10% for bends and welds. Always check local code for maximum spacing and support requirements.
Guard Rails
Similar to handrails but typically include vertical pickets. Count rail lengths and picket spacing (usually 4” o.c.). For every 10 LF, around 30–35 pickets are required. Weight = total length × 3 lbs/ft + (pickets × 1.5 lbs each).
Ladders
Each ladder is counted separately. Height is taken from section drawings. Weight = (Side rails + rungs) × unit weight. Rungs spaced 12” o.c. For a 15’ ladder with 2 rails of 1½”×¼” flat bars and 15 rungs, total ~120 lbs.
Gratings
Measured in square feet from floor or platform layouts. Quantity = Length × Width. Total sq.ft × 10 lbs/sq.ft (average bar grating weight). Subtract openings for manholes or hatches. Always include extra material for cutouts and waste.
Steel Frames Around Openings
Count each framed opening from plan. Length = perimeter of opening × section weight per foot. For a 4’×6’ opening framed with L3×3×¼ angles (7.1 lbs/ft): perimeter 20’ × 7.1 = 142 lbs. Double check reinforcement requirements for load bearing.
Canopy Framing
Quantified by area. Mark beam and purlin spacing to determine number of members. Example: 10’×20’ canopy with beams every 5’ → 5 lines × 20’ = 100 LF × 6 lbs/ft = 600 lbs total. Include connections, bolts and welding material in total weight.
Stairs & Platforms
Each stair flight and platform is measured separately. Stairs = stringer length (√(rise² + run²)) × 2 + treads and risers. Platform area in sq.ft × 12 lbs/sq.ft (average steel platform weight). Add 10% for connections. Remember to include handrails and guardrails in total.
Stair Stringers
Measured per linear foot based on the sloped run. Multiply length by section weight per foot (e.g., C10x20 → 20 lbs/ft). For a 12’ stringer, 12 × 20 = 240 lbs each. Check if intermediate supports are needed for longer spans.
Landings
Area = Length × Width in sq.ft. Multiply by 10 lbs/sq.ft (typical grating or plate landing). Include perimeter angles and railing in additional weight. Consider the weight of embedded anchors or plates separately.
Floor Deck
Mark deck areas on structural plans. Multiply area by unit weight (2.5–3 lbs/sq.ft for 1½” deck). Example: 2000 sq.ft × 2.5 = 5000 lbs. Add 2% overlap allowance. Account for openings, penetrations and cutouts in total area.
Roof Deck
Same as floor deck but area taken from roof plan. Typical unit weight 2 lbs/sq.ft for 1” deck. Example: 3000 sq.ft × 2 = 6000 lbs. Include parapets, overhangs and roof edges in quantity.
Shear Studs
Count studs from beam schedules. Usually spaced 6” o.c. along beam length. Example: Beam 30’ = 360” ÷ 6” = 60 studs. Multiply by total number of beams. Each stud weighs ~0.35 lbs. Check if any studs require special coatings or finishes
Deck Edge Angles
Measured along the perimeter of deck areas. Multiply total linear feet by the section weight (usually L2×2×¼ = 3 lbs/ft) and add 5% for mitered joints. Be sure to include fasteners and connection plates in the total weight.
Lintels and Headers
Count every opening and measure the span length. Multiply by the section weight per foot (e.g., L4×3×¼ = 5.6 lbs/ft). For a 6’ opening, the total comes to 6 × 5.6 = 33.6 lbs include bearing plates where required.
Metal Decking
Quantify by marking total roof and floor deck areas separately. Multiply the area by unit weight (2–3 lbs/sq.ft) and deduct for openings larger than 4 sq.ft. Add around 2% for lap allowance and minor waste.
